    Frequently Asked Questions

    • How do I become a member and what does it cost?

Community energy projects are typically set up as Community Benefit Societies. Becoming a member involves buying a share – in our case, membership costs just £1. This entitles you to one vote and a say in how the organisation is run. Community Benefit Societies are democratically owned, reinvest profits into local projects rather than paying shareholders, and are transparent and accountable to members.

    • What are the benefits of joining?

Joining supports local climate action and helps build a fairer energy system. Members have a say in how projects are developed, can invest in share offers and earn a fair return, help fund improvements such as grants for community buildings, and become part of a network of people who care about sustainability and community resilience. Membership also enables you to participate in voting and stand for election to our board.

    • How can I volunteer and what kind of roles are there?

Our volunteers make our work possible. You can contribute in many ways, from helping with community outreach and events to assisting with research, marketing or technical tasks. Community energy initiatives around the world emphasise that getting involved can include donating, researching or volunteering. Whatever your skills, there’s a role for you.

    • How much time do I need to commit to volunteering?

We appreciate any time you can give. Some roles, such as helping at events or supporting a specific project, may require just a few hours occasionally. Others, like joining a working group, involve a more regular commitment. We’ll work with you to find a volunteering opportunity that fits your availability.

    • Can I donate without becoming a member?

Yes. Donations are always welcome and help us expand the community fund. Your contribution goes directly towards project development and local initiatives. In a Community Benefit Society, profits are reinvested into community projects rather than paid out to shareholders
